What each browser records

Which of video, console, network and driver log you get from Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Playwright.

Every session can keep four things for you. Which ones you actually get depends on the browser — and, for Firefox, on the operating system underneath it.

BrowserVideoConsoleNetworkDriver log

Edge✅✅✅✅
Firefox on macOS✅✅✅✅
Firefox on Windows✅❌❌✅
Safari✅❌❌✅

Safari keeps no console or network logs. Apple's engine gives us no way to read them, so there is nothing to collect. Safari sessions still record video.

Firefox on Windows keeps none either. The same Firefox on macOS does. If you need those logs from Firefox, pick a macOS platform — or run Firefox through Selenium, where capture works on both.

What the four are

  • Video — a recording of the session. Off unless you ask for it.
  • Console — whatever your site printed to the browser console.
  • Network — a log of every request the page made. Newline-delimited JSON, not a HAR file.
  • Driver log — the browser's own launch and connection output.
All four are off by default on Playwright. On Selenium, console, network and driver are on unless you turn them off. Here you have to ask: console: true, network: true, driver: true, recording: true.

You can find them all on the session page afterwards — see Sessions & Artifacts.
