Follow these guidelines to build effective, maintainable test plans that deliver actionable insights.

One plan per release

Create a dedicated plan for each release. This gives you a clear, versioned record of what was tested and the results, making it easy to compare quality across releases.

Descriptive naming

Use names like "v3.0 — Release Plan" or "Sprint 14 — Regression Plan" that sort naturally and communicate scope at a glance. Avoid generic names like "Test Plan 1."

Define scope early

Before linking cycles, decide what the plan covers. Write clear entry and exit criteria in the description so everyone knows when the plan is "done."

Keep cycles focused

Link focused, well-scoped cycles rather than one massive cycle. This makes per-cycle progress meaningful and helps identify which areas are lagging.

Assign clear ownership

Each linked cycle should have an owner responsible for driving execution, and every test case within it should have an assigned tester. Avoid unassigned items.

Review progress daily

During active testing, check the plan dashboard daily. Identify blocked or stalled cycles early and reallocate resources before they become schedule risks.

Use templates via cloning

Create a "template" plan with your standard cycle structure and clone it for each release. This ensures consistency and saves setup time across iterations.

Document exit criteria

In the plan description, specify the minimum pass rate and completion percentage required for sign-off. Example: "95% completion, 90% pass rate for go-live."

Sprint Planning Workflow

A recommended workflow for sprint-based teams using test plans:

  1. Sprint start: Clone the previous sprint's plan. Rename it to reflect the current sprint number.
  2. Plan the scope: Link any new feature cycles created for this sprint's stories. Unlink cycles from the previous sprint that are no longer relevant.
  3. Assign testers: Ensure all test cases across the plan's cycles have assigned testers.
  4. Execute daily: Testers execute from their cycles. The plan dashboard updates automatically.
  5. Sprint review: Present the plan's aggregated progress in the sprint review. Use the completion percentage and pass rate to demonstrate quality.
  6. Retrospective: Review blocked and failed cases. Document lessons learned in the plan description for future reference.

Release Planning Workflow

A recommended workflow for release-based teams:

  1. Release kick-off: Create a new plan (or clone the previous release's plan) with entry criteria documented in the description.
  2. Build the plan: Link all cycles that must pass for the release — regression, integration, performance, UAT, security, and any feature-specific cycles.
  3. Track continuously: Monitor the plan's aggregated progress as testing proceeds over days or weeks. Identify bottlenecks early.
  4. Go/no-go decision: Present the plan's final metrics to stakeholders. If the exit criteria (documented in the description) are met, approve the release.
  5. Archive: After release, the plan serves as a permanent record of what was tested and the results.

FAQ

What is the difference between a test plan and a test cycle?

A test cycle is a single round of test execution — a concrete collection of test cases with individual assignments and statuses. A test plan is a higher-level strategic container that groups multiple cycles together. Plans provide aggregated progress across all linked cycles. Use a cycle for a specific test run, and a plan to coordinate and track an entire testing initiative (such as a release or sprint). See the Plan vs. Cycle section for a detailed comparison.

Can a test cycle belong to multiple plans?

Yes. A test cycle can be linked to any number of test plans simultaneously. This is useful when the same cycle is relevant to multiple scopes — for example, a "Core Regression" cycle might be linked to both the "v3.0 Release Plan" and the "Sprint 14 Plan." Execution updates to the cycle are reflected in all linked plans.

Can a test case belong to multiple plans?

Yes. A test case that is part of a cycle will appear in every plan that links that cycle. Because execution data is tracked per cycle, the same case can roll up into multiple plans without any conflicts.

Does cloning a plan also clone the linked cycles?

No. Cloning a plan creates a new plan that links the same existing cycles. The cycles themselves are not duplicated. If you need fresh cycles with reset execution statuses, first clone the cycles individually from the Test Cycles tab, then link the cloned cycles to the cloned plan.

How does execution sync between a plan and its linked cycles?

Execution is bi-directionally synchronized. If you execute a test case from the plan view, the status update appears in the linked cycle. If you execute from the cycle view, the update appears in the plan's aggregated progress. There is only one underlying execution record, so there are no conflicts or duplicates regardless of where the execution happens.

What happens to the plan if I delete a linked cycle?

If a cycle linked to a plan is deleted, it is automatically removed from the plan. The plan's aggregated progress recalculates to exclude the deleted cycle's data. This event is recorded in the plan history. The plan itself remains unaffected otherwise.

Can I use test plans with CI/CD automation?

Test plans work seamlessly with CI/CD automation. When your CI pipeline pushes results to a cycle via the @testkase/reporter CLI, those results are automatically reflected in any plan that links that cycle. You do not need to configure anything additional on the plan side. See the Automation guide for pipeline setup details.

How do I use plans for compliance and audit reporting?

Test plans are ideal for compliance because they provide a single document-of-record for an entire testing initiative. The plan's history tab gives you a timestamped audit trail of every change. Combined with cycle-level execution histories and the ability to generate reports, you can produce comprehensive evidence of testing activities for regulatory audits (FDA, SOC 2, ISO 27001, etc.).

Is there a limit to how many cycles a plan can contain?

There is no hard limit on the number of linked cycles in a plan. TestKase is designed to handle large plans efficiently. For very large plans with hundreds of test cases across many cycles, the aggregated progress bar and per-cycle breakdowns help you navigate the data without being overwhelmed.

Can I add a test case to a plan without putting it in a cycle?

No. A plan links test cycles, not individual test cases, so there is no way to attach a standalone case directly to a plan. To include a test case in a plan, add it to a test cycle and link that cycle to the plan. Every case in the linked cycle then rolls up into the plan automatically.
